Coiling or Security Grilles function similar to overhead doors and allow for airflow and visibility while securing two separate spaces. Coiling Security Grilles are most commonly utilized at storefronts, in school corridors, cafeteria, pharmacies, and healthcare settings. Grilles keep out unauthorized access and help eliminate forced entry. Sizes are often custom tailored to the opening and usually max out at 20′ heights and 40′ widths, but larger sizes may be available upon request.


The industry standard grille can usually withstand 40,000-60,000 cycles in it’s lifetime before requiring replacement. The grille ‘curtain’ is rolled up into an overhead coil manually with the assistance of a spring system, crank opened/closed, or by way of an electric motor mounted above or on the side. Some options available may be decorative hoods/fascias/trims, and cylinder locks. Aluminum alloy is extremely common but stainless and galvanized steel are also commonly utilized metals for coiling grilles and the common rod diamter is 1/4 – 1/2″. 2″ vertical rod spacing is typical with vertical eyeletted aluminum spaced 9″ apart. These spacings may be adjusted depending on the manufacturer or desired security. Counter blanace torsion spring system assists operation for manual systems.


The rolling coil portion is typically on the inside of the opening and may or may not contain an enclosed hood assembly which can be enamel finished, aluminum mill, anodized, powdercoated, or stainless steel. Grille tracks or guides on either side of the grill support the weight of the unit. On the bottom of the grille a ‘bottom bar’ of extruded tubular aluminum typically resides which might house various locking mechanisms. The conventional mounting style is to secure the grille guides/tracks to the framed opening’s jambs and header. Another mounting approach is to install structural tubes from the floor to the structure above. These tubes are factory prepared for the attachment of the grille/curtain components and allow for the entire grille system to be installed prior to the framing of the walls/opening.

Some building codes have emergency exit provisions which require swift mass egress, and for this reason many grille manufacturers sell a manual release systems for electric operated systems, which have wall-mounted pull handles. Also high-cycle heavy duty springs may be available for high use applications which can extend the use cycles to 50,000-100,000 uses or more.
